A mech shooter 23 years in the making finally ships

In 2003 a group of friends started a game company to build a multiplayer mech shooter. It was an ambitious idea at the time. They built a demo that looked promising, but the project was never finished. This month, 23 years later, that game finally exists. It is called Missile Massacre, and it is a browser-based 3D mecha combat game you can play right now.

The original developer put the reasons plainly in a Hacker News launch post. "We developed a pretty cool demo, but we never finished the project," they wrote. "I've always wanted to finish it." In 2026 they rebuilt the game using modern web technology instead of the old desktop engine, and released the first public version.

Missile Massacre is fast and loose. You pilot a mech, destroy enemy bots, and can fight up to three other players in real time. There is a solo wave mode that tracks kills and a kill-to-death ratio, plus quick-play matchmaking that drops you into an open arena with strangers. Controls are minimal: WASD to move, mouse to aim, and a boost to cover ground.

The clever part is how open the game is. Custom maps load from any publicly hosted Markdown file passed as a URL parameter, and custom mech skins work the same way. Players can build and share their own arenas and pilots without any upload system in the way. Sample maps range from a dense city at dusk to a giant nursery crib with pastel mechs. An in-browser game builder stitches a room, map and mech together into a single shareable link.

It is a small, personal project rather than a blockbuster. That is partly the point. It is the payoff of a two-decade-old itch, released into the browser where anyone can load it and play three minutes later. No download, no install, no account. You click, you are in the arena.
