Building Panels from Old T-Shirts

In Jakarta, in 2025, a team of designers presented a wall panel made entirely of discarded fast-fashion clothing. The panel is the interior cladding for a "fashion creative hub" — a co-working space for designers, pattern cutters, and small labels.
The walls of the room are made of the same offcuts the room's tenants used to throw away. The paper is small.
The idea is not. Fashion waste is one of the largest unrecycled waste streams in the world.
Most of it is downcycled into insulation, mattress stuffing, or cleaning rags. The Indonesian team's contribution is a design that upcycles it instead — taking the post-consumer fabric scraps and turning them into a structural, aesthetic, acoustically-tuned wall finish.
The future of sustainable building may not be the high-tech carbon-sequestering concrete. It may be a return to the vernacular builder who used whatever was nearby.
A second team, at the University of Stuttgart's ITECH program, took a similar idea in a more architectural direction. Their *Waste Textile Morphologies project (2024) made composite building blocks from the same waste stream — tetrahedral modules that can be assembled into larger architectural structures, with a generative design tool that optimizes the material layout based on what is actually in stock at the local textile recycling facility. Both projects, separately, are doing the same thing: they are treating waste as a design material, not a problem to be hidden.* What is worth paying attention to is the logistics of this, not just the aesthetics.
The Stuttgart system in particular is a small but real example of just-in-time architecture — a building designed to be assembled from whatever happens to be at the recycler this week. The shape of the structure emerges from the inventory, not the other way around.
The architect's job is no longer to specify a material and order it; the architect's job is to design a structure that responds to whatever arrives. The future of sustainable building may not be the high-tech carbon-sequestering concrete.
It may not be the geo-distributed 3D-printed housing.
The future may be a return to the vernacular builder who used whatever was nearby — except now the vernacular is a database of waste streams and the builder is a designer with a generative tool. The architect becomes an editor of the local material flow, rather than a customer of a global supply chain. There is a second thing in the Stuttgart tool that is interesting on its own.
The generative algorithm does not optimize for what the architect wants. It optimizes for what the recycler has. That is a quiet inversion. The brief is no longer "design a wall that does X." The brief is "design a wall that can be built from whatever comes through the door on Monday." The architecture is shaped by its material reality, not by an abstract specification.
The Indonesian and Stuttgart teams are not, individually, going to fix the fashion-waste problem. But they are doing something useful: they are showing that the unit of design can be a waste stream.
A waste stream is not garbage to be managed. It is a material to be specified against.
That reframe is enough to change what an architect spends their time on.
