For three weeks, from 13 to 31 July 2026, Politecnico di Torino becomes a major international laboratory devoted to the future of smart structures.

From 13 to 31 July 2026, Politecnico di Torino is hosting APESS 2026 — an international programme that transforms the university into a laboratory for smart structures. Researchers, engineers, and designers from across the world are working together on the next generation of how buildings, bridges, and public infrastructure sense, respond, and adapt.

The programme is called APESS — Advanced Prototyping for Emerging Smart Structures — and it is exactly the kind of thing that happens when a university decides to stop being a teaching building and start being a workshop.


Smart structures are buildings that can tell you how they are feeling. Sensors embedded in concrete, in steel, in timber, reporting back on stress, temperature, vibration, corrosion. A bridge that knows when it is tired. A facade that adjusts to the sun. A roof that measures snow load in real time and decides whether to alert someone.

This is not science fiction. It is happening now, in a nineteenth-century building in Turin, with researchers who flew in from three continents to spend three weeks prototyping together.


The interesting thing about APESS is not the technology itself. It is the format. A three-week intensive, hands-on, cross-disciplinary, international. Not a conference where people present papers. A workshop where people build things. The future of materials is not being designed in a lab with a ten-year roadmap. It is being built in a room in Turin, in July, by people who will fly home and forget each other's names but remember what they built together.

That is how prototyping works. That is how new materials happen. Not in a press release. In a room.
